瓦地倫谷地 – 智慧七柱

瓦地倫谷地 在亞拉伯語中解作「紅色的山谷」，它是位於 約旦 西南部，是由鮮紅色型態奇特的花崗岩及砂岩形成，非常壯觀，也是 約旦 最大的谷地，曾是 納巴泰人（Nabateans）及現在 貝都因人（Bedouins）聚居地。

當進入谷地，馬上出現眼前的，就是所謂：T.E. Lawrence 的 智慧七柱（Seven Pillars of Wisdom不要只憑外觀，要加上大量的幻想）。
瓦地倫谷地 曾在 1916至1918年 亞拉伯大起義（Arab Revolt）中，是T.E. Lawrence和 亞拉伯起義大軍的基地及指揮中心。

從 約旦 回來之後，我急不及待地去找 T.E. Lawrence的名著『智慧七柱 Seven Pillars of Wisdom』看過究竟。

在 亞拉伯大起義 期間，T.E. Lawrence（Thomas Edward Lawrence 1888-1935）是 英國特派聯絡官，協助亞拉伯義軍，因他早期曾在 巴勒斯坦 及 敘利亞 參與考古，不但對亞拉伯國家有相當認識，更精通 亞拉伯語（据我們的導遊講，他的亞拉伯語帶有 貝都因 口音），1962年荷里活更將他的事跡拍成電影，名為「沙漠梟雄 Lawrence of Arabia」。

他的『智慧七柱』原意是，想寫關於七個亞拉伯城市，但在戰爭之後，他改寫為他的自傳及參戰經歷，1922年初版，其後經過多次壓縮及刪減，1935年在他交通意外去世後，才出版1926年的刪改版，就是現時所流行的版本，而他的手稿，現存大英博物館。

事實，在政治舞台上，並沒有免費的午餐，英、法 兩國當年拔刀相助亞拉伯人起義 - 脫離土耳其奧斯曼帝國的統治，就是想「瓜分」北菲及中東這塊肥肉。
羅馬帝國極盛時期，也曾企圖入侵亞拉伯半島，但奈何不熟識沙漠，而 英、法 兩國就「英明」得多，遣派了一位特派聯絡官，問題就迎刃而解了。

革命之後，亞拉伯地區不但未能獨立，更紛紛成為 英、法 的保護國，而 T.E. Lawrence 背負著「國家英雄」名義，卻未能實踐與他出生入死戰友的承諾，加上戰爭留下的陰影，精神幾乎崩潰，同時覺得被國家利用，故拒絕任何總督職位，埋頭寫作。

他『智慧七柱』的序，是首情詩，是獻給 S.A. 的，相信S.A.是指Sheikh Ahmed 是他的一位年青亞拉伯助手，T.E. Lawrence 的愛情生活，對外界來說一直都是個疑團。

I love you, so I drew these tides of men into my hands
and wrote my will across the sky in stars
To earn you Freedom, the seven pillared worthy house,
that your eyes might be shining for me
When we came.

Death seemed my servant on the road, till we were near
and saw you waiting:
